Creating pseudo stereo from mono

I have been playing with Audiomulch only a few weeks now and have a rather challenging "live" application that involves ham radio (amateur radio).  Bandwidth is limited to about 4.5 kHz (single side-band, SSB instead of AM or FM) and my "audience" is other radio amateurs.    So this is shortwave radio.  An additional problem is that receivers that amateurs use aren't really capable of true stereo reception most of the time so I guess I am just trying to create a stereo "effect."   What I am looking for is some sort of spatial separation.....perhaps I need to use two mono audio inputs,  delay left /lag right by the same amount of time + panning left and right audio channels that someone suggested.

Can anyone provide suggestions on pseudo stereo and how to generate that from mono?  I am open to advice on plugins to use to create "pseudo" stereo from mono input.   Just to be clarify,  my audio is merely speech,  no music.

Cheers,

JJ

I recently had to master an album that was all in mono, so we tried a few things to stereoize it a bit. Delaying one channel is one possibility. Other is the "stereo shuffling" technique, whereby you split the mono signal into two signals, one L one R, and have a graphic eq for each channel. You alternatively cut and boost frequencies in the L channel, and then cut and boost the OPPOSITE frequencies in the R channel. Can work quite well sometimes. I set up a preset in Voxengo Marvel GEQ to do this (free):

Don't cut and boost too much, about 3dB is a great number to start with. I've never tried it on M and S but that would be another possibility to try.

Hey Babaluma.

So, using the SoundIn contraption I will split, say, L into 2 outputs.   What about the SoundOut?  I assume that I will need to combine the 2 channels into just 1 OUT?

I may be able to plug in two "identical" mics into L and R inputs of my Steinberg UR22 in future, but the problem remains in that I can only have ONE physical OUT from the UR22.

Cheers,

JJ

Hello Babaluma,

I wonder if you could email or cut/paste the view of a  "bare-bones" Contraption Panel that shows this?

Cheers,

Sure, it's a very quick/easy patch!

Sure appreciate it!  Obviously I will need to apply final EQ before my audio gets on the air!

Sorry to reply late to this thread topic/question, I just noticed it. As far as I am aware the only plugin that can create a genuine stereo signal from a mono source without any side effects that will sum back to mono perfectly is Brainworx's bx_stereomaker, It is available from some online stores or direct from the Plugin Alliance website (where you can download a fully functional time limited demo version) here; https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/bx_stereomaker.html

All of the plugins which they do are absolutely top notch, I have been onboard since the release of the original bx_1 mid/side EQ/de-essr and they've just gotten bette as time has gone by.

Hope that is useful to the OP and others, All the best
