hi there,

can anyone list a few midi controllers that support 14bit resolution?
can be big manufacturers as well as custom made controllers.
basically what i'm looking for is a 14bit control PAD (such as the one in korg nanopad, unfortunatelly korg only offers 7bit) for controlling the metasurface.
with 7bit controllers it is very inaccurate as they offer only 127steps. metasurface has 1000 steps in both axes. even a gentle move of a finger makes sudden and rapid changes to the parameters.
So i think a 14bit controller would help here a lot. it can be a pad or a joystick.
one of my thoughts was faderfox lv3 but i have no idea if it offers 14bit. anyone has any experience with faderfox controllers and audiomulch?
thanks in advance for any hints.

I don't know about MIDI controllers, but if you can afford to make the Metasurface full screen then you could consider a Wacom tablet. There are relatively cheap ones out there and I've found them quite good -- you need to hold a pen though.

thanks for the tip Ross.

hmm, never thought there are other ways to control it apart from a midi controller. how would you set it up then? meaning what control type do you choose? CC or other?

do you think it would work on a two screen setup? a laptop with a hooked up monitor? i would have metasurface full screen on one monitor and patcher on the laptop screen.

I just mean using it instead of the mouse. No special setup required (although there are probably Wacom -> MIDI apps, I never investigated).

I'll second Ross on the cheap WACOM.
They're very handy for controlling the metasurface as opposed to the mouse.

Another option if you have experience using something like PD would be to input MIDI from your controller and add some controls to make the changes a little more smooth and less jumpy before porting it across to AM.

I've done this really simply but I was inputting raw data to convert to MIDI in PD already anyway.

Osculator , among other things,has a conversion wacom2midi and can transmit NRPN.

The Behringer BCR2000 has 14-bit resolution and NRPN. I just spent the last couple of days trying to configure it for AudioMulch. It has both absolute and relative addressing for continuous controllers, but I don't think AM supports the latter, if it's the same as increment/decrement (which the BCR can also do for NRPN). Also, with absolute addressing, I think the BCR needs sysex editing to change the resolution. I set up a 14-bit absolute CC to control AM's clock tempo, but it jumps in steps of 3.9291 beats, which equals 500/128. So I guess that something in the BCR needs editing. If I make any progress with it, I'll report back.

@drlids NRPN is not the same as the 14 bit controllers AM currently supports. AM supports the original MIDI spec of a 14 bit controller consisting of two CC messages:
CC n => MSB
CC n + 32 => LSB

I have no idea if the BCR2000 supports this.

Without doubt AM should also support 14 bit NRPNs (and it will, eventually)

The BCR2000 permit the use of NRPN message, in order to configure the BCR you can do it manually as described in the user manual or you can use one of the BCR2000 editing software.
You can find a lot of resource on the yahoo BCR/BCF group
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bc2000/?v=1&t=directory&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=dir&slk=1

and here , if you are on windows, BC edit a BCR/BCF free editing software

I use the BCR 2000 from about 5 years and i love his great flexibility
