hi there,

i'd be very grateful i someone could putt some light on the limiter and how is it used. Can't really wrap my head around it. Get coufused by  the -db indicator by treshold setting. How do I know at what level I should start limiting if I don't see to what level top peaks go. I have to check the levels in different software or is there a meter in audiomulch (apart form the tiny meter on the limiter.

But what i'm actually trying to achieve. I have this track, it doesn't go over -30 dB, but in a few places theres is a door slam and for a very short time the level rises to -18dB.

I'd like to use the limiter to limit the door slams to about -24dB or even more like 28dB. How do I set up the limiter for such a scenario?

edit:

just one more thing that is confusing to me. The In display on the limiter. In Audiomulch help it sais that the In meter dispalys "the level of the incoming signal AFTER Input Gain has been applied." Shouldn't that result in higher picks/higher green bars when i move the "input gain" slider? In my case there is no difference between no input gain and full input gain. even if I move the slider to -144dB the green bars still go up and down. Doesn't it mean that the meter displays the level of incoming singal BEFORE Input Gain has been applies?  Can someone on clarify?

bests,

Mac

Hi Mac,

(for reference: http://www.audiomulch.com/help/contraption-ref/Limiter )

>>>How do I know at what level I should start limiting if I don't see to what level top peaks go.<<<

This is what the "In" meter indicates: the peak input level.

The "In" meter (the left hand one) on the Limiter contraption displays the input level. The little arrow to the left of it shows the threshold (where limiting will start).

>>> I'd like to use the limiter to limit the door slams to about -24dB or even more like 28dB. How do I set up the limiter for such a scenario?

Set input gain to 0dB.

Set the threshold to the limit level. For example, to limit to below -24dB set the Threshold to -24dB.

If you want the output level to be -24dB you also need to set the Ceiling to -24dB. The threshold level at input (post gain) becomes the ceiling level at output.

I need to do some more testing but, this looks like a bug in the metering to me. You're correct that the In meter should be displaying post-gain level (since the threshold is applied post-gain).

Send me an email at rossb@audiomulch.com and I'll send you a fixed version to try.

Thanks,

Ross.
