I can't use MIDI from a plugin?

I have a VST plugin from CableGuys called MIDIShaper which is a neat MIDI LFO type of thing that can output to a bunch of different MIDI CC's with variable shapes, envelope followers, and all kinds of good magic.

Surely perfect for controlling things in AudioMulch I thought!

I instantiate a VST plugin contraption and I can see it has a MIDI Output port. As long as the audio outs of the plugin are connected to something (I used a spare AuxiliaryOut) the plugin gets clock and appears to work.

However I can't seem to map any parameters to accept MIDI CC from the plugin. Parameter controls seems to be constrained to only work with system MIDI inputs. I've checked the help & the FAQ and can't find any discussion of this topic.

Is it really not possible to use MIDI CC generated within AudioMulch to control anything in AudioMulch?

The workaround I guess, at least with this plugin, is to have MIDIShaper output to the IAC bus and then route the IAC Bus to AudioMulch MIDIInput2+.

I've just tested this and it basically works so I'm happy enough.

That said using the IAC bus this way has been known to introduce latency so it's probably not an ideal solution in all cases. I'd hope Mulch would it easier to work with MIDI in the future.

Kudos on the parameter control mappings though, they look dandy.

Yes it is really not possible. MIDI routing is really just there to support VST plugins.

I agree what you are asking for would be nice but MIDI is not a major focus of AM. In the future (as in the past) I will be putting more focus on audio processing than on MIDI. There are a number of other great tools designed with MIDI in mind: max.msp and Plogue Bidule come to mind -- you should check them out.

That said, perhaps I will support internal MIDI loopback in the future. But more likely built-in LFOs as many people have been requesting.

Ross.
