0.9b9 Release Notes

20/12/2001 AudioMulch 0.9b9 Release Notes

AudioMulch version 0.9b9 is now available from the download page. This version will expire on March 20th 2002.

AudioMulch version 0.9b9 incorporates a new streaming sound file subsystem which supports WAV and AIFF sound files, higher bit depths (including 24bit and floating point), and efficient playback of many sound files simultaneously. A new File Player contraption has been added to allow playback of multiple sound files. Memory resident samples such as those used by LoopPlayer, Drums and BubbleBlower are now loaded in the background and retained across preset changes. This addresses previous problems with sample loading causing clicks in the real-time audio stream.

At present, SoundIn and the new FilePlayer contraption can be used to stream long sound files from disk. Other sound file playing contraptions are planned for the future.

The following features were added or updated in this release:

  • Implemented new sound file streaming engine
  • Added support for AIFF sound files
  • Added support for 24 bit, 32 bit and floating point sound files
  • Added background sample loading / pooling
  • Added display of sound file memory usage, throughput and sample load progress to the status bar
  • Added new FilePlayer contraption to the Beta category
  • Sound File Open & Save dialog Auto Play state is now remembered
  • Added the ability to change the playback position while playing the SoundOut sound file
  • Moved Arpeggiator from the Beta category to the Signal Generators category
  • Moved PulseComb from the Beta category to the Effects category

The following bugs have been fixed in this release:

  • Fixed bug in Drums where sounds would sometimes play back at high volume after they were muted
  • Fixed bug in SoundOut where the record time selection was in milliseconds although it is displayed as seconds
  • Fixed bug where the last character from the Notes window text was not saved

The following known issues have been introduced in this release.

  • Opening a sound file which has been opened for SoundOut recording in another contraption will result in a crash
  • Automating SoundIn or SoundOut Location could cause a crash
  • Both LoopPlayer and BubbleBlower are restricted to using a 16 bit sample format internally, even when a higher bit depth sample has been loaded.

You can review the release notes for the previous version (0.9b8 patch 1) here.

The development of this release has taken longer than expected. Thank you to everyone for your patience and please accept my apologies for the delay.
