0.9b10 Release Notes

5/7/2002 AudioMulch 0.9b10 Release Notes

AudioMulch version 0.9b10 is now available from the download page. This version will expire on October 5th, 2002.

AudioMulch version 0.9b10 introduces support for ASIO and DirectSound audio drivers. When used with soundcards that provide support for these drivers AudioMulch is able to achieve significantly lower latency than was previously possible. In many cases this means that AudioMulch can now process real-time input without perceptible delay. AudioMulch takes advantage of ASIO 24bit audio support where available.

Support for an additional 8 channels of real-time audio input and output has been added through the addition of 4 new AuxIn and AuxOut devices, bringing the total number of supported real-time channels to 24.

It is now possible to specify which soundcard channels will be used for Sound File Preview in the Select Sound File dialog. This allows users with multichannel sound cards to preview sound files on alternate outputs, which could be connected to headphones for example.

Note that for the time being AudioMulch only operates at a sample rate of 44100 Hz. This makes it incompatible with ASIO drivers which do not support 44100 Hz operation such as the Emu APS and SoundBlaster Live! KX drivers. AudioMulch will function correctly with these soundcards when using standard Windows drivers.

Users of previous versions of AudioMulch will need to update their audio settings to achieve lower latencty, as this version ignores any previous audio settings. Note that the audio buffer settings are now expressed in sample frames rather than bytes, typically this means that the new buffer size numbers will be four times smaller to achieve the same latency as earlier versions.

The MIDI clock syncronisation subsystem has undergone some modifications since the previous release in order to integrate ASIO support. Users experiencing degraded syncronisation performance should report the problem in order to assist the improvement of this feature in future releases.

The following bug has been fixed in this release:

  • Fixed problem which could cause AudioMulch to crash if Chase MIDI Sync was enabled before real-time audio

You can review the release notes for the previous version (0.9b9 patch 1) here.

Special thanks to Phil Burk and the PortAudio gang for making PortAudio a reality, Stephen Graham for sound advice, and Merlijn Blaauw for assistance with Hammerfall compatibility testing for this release. Thank you to all users who have registered, or reported bugs from the last release. There remain a number of bugs which will be fixed in subsequent releases.
